“What do I do with my life and where do I go, since it is I who chooses, not my thoughts and not my feelings?” or to put it more briefly, “Now what?”
So can ACT help with this?
There are two ways, and they are actually in the name Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
The first step – Accept, is something you have already been doing – to observe the thoughts your mind tries to hook you with and act in the direction of your commitment even when you are feeling ‘hooked’. What you are currently struggling with is that your mind is hooking you with the notion that you have to have a Type 1 career or mission. But what if you are going to have a Type 2 mission? If that is the case, then paying attention to these thoughts is taking your attention away from the mission itself. I know this doesn’t necessarily make the next step any clearer for you. That’s where the second step comes in.
So now you are going to Commit. But then immediately your mind comes up with the question, “Yes, but what am I going to commit to?”
Now, what I’m about to say is something that your mind will not like. And when I say your mind will not like it, I mean that what I am saying will provoke very ‘hooky’ thoughts. Now, we’ve already covered how to treat such thoughts and feelings – stand back and observe the thought, see it as a thought, and move towards the feelings that show up, seeing them as feelings that will pass. So now you know how to respond to your mind when it responds to what I have to say in answer to the question: “Yes, but what am I going to commit to?”
So here it is:
It doesn’t matter, as long as you make what you do meaningful and purposeful each time you do it.
What are you doing today? How can you make that meaningful and valuable? Just for today.
