What is ACT?

ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a modern form of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). ACT is the most modern and scientifically proven approach to therapy available today. ACT is all about effective, efficient treatment, allowing you to live more fully, quickly.

ACT skills bring us more fully into the here and now, less caught up with difficult thoughts and feelings, more aware of what we really care about, and living by these values more each moment. Accept, choose and take action!

How Can ACT Help You?

ACT is all about learning skills to help us be the kind of people that we want to be. In the same way that you can learn to cook, to ride a bike or to fly a spaceship so to can you learn to live a more meaningful life, in touch with what’s important to you. Loosen the ties of anxiety, depression, anger, and unhelpful habits, and free yourself up to live a life you choose.

Why Choose an ACT Trained Therapist?

ACT is the most modern and effective form of CBT. We know that the specific psychological processes we move in ACT therapy actually make the difference. ACT Therapists know the most effective, proven ways to help you achieve your goals - whether that's improving your relationship with your loved ones, managing anxiety, or thousands more. Your goal could be achieving peak performance, for example ACT training has been helped Australian Olympians, golfers, tennis players and top AFL and NRL teams!

How will we know this is working for you?

As ACT therapists we are deeply concerned with what you really want out of therapy. What in your life you want to have more, engaged with more, appreciate more. How you want to grow. Clinical psychology, in common with modern psychiatry, has too often focused on helping patients have less. Less sadness, less nervousness, less pain. We don’t want our clients to suffer. But perhaps even more, we don’t want them to live their lives without meaning, without purpose – without truly caring about the things important to them - and the pain that sometimes comes with it. ACT skills help people find their sense of meaning and purpose, and to effectively handle the pain that comes along the way.

So what do you really want out of therapy?

Let’s say you had less struggle with anxiety, or that sad thoughts much show up, unwanted urges, difficult memories, that these were more like a radio in the background and less like that blaring noise interfering with your life. What would you do, a little more of, with your life? Clarifying values, meaning and purpose in ACT is key to our encounter from meeting. We want to know who you really are, how you spend your days and evenings, and how you’d like to do that more freely and fully. Engage in the things you would love to be doing.

Values, purpose, caring – and committed action.

Often when we think about the things we really want our minds immediately bring up the ways which they won’t happen, or in which we have tried and failed. Thanks mind! Learning to notice these thoughts as thoughts, without such entanglement, simply as the normal reaction of a mind whose sole purpose sometimes seems to be preventing us from harm, at whatever cost, can free ourselves up to move forward, just a little. The journey of thousand mile starts with a single step. Let us help you take that step, and another, and another… and to handle the obstacles along the way.
